Riftstone Portal was released in 2002 as part of the Judgment expansion, the third and final set in the Odyssey block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set focused heavily on graveyard mechanics and shifted the game’s meta toward more aggressive, color-heavy strategies. The card was designed to support multi-color decks by providing a flexible mana source, reflecting the expansion’s thematic emphasis on the unstable, magical landscape of the Odyssey setting.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Edward P. Beard Jr., who utilized his signature style to depict the titular rift in a dark, atmospheric environment.
