Where it came from
Righteous Aura was released in 1997 as part of the Visions expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was notable for being the first to be designed as a standalone expansion that did not require the base set to play. It was created to push the boundaries of card mechanics, introducing new keywords and themes that reflected the game's evolving world-building during the late nineties.
The card features artwork by Susan Van Camp, a prolific illustrator for the game during its formative years. Her design work for Righteous Aura focuses on the intersection of spirituality and defensive utility, utilizing a bright, ethereal aesthetic that aligns with the White mana alignment's emphasis on protection and life-gain. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for decks focused on player preservation, serving as a staple for those looking to mitigate incoming damage in casual and limited play environments.
