Provenance

Where it came from

Rising Miasma was released in 2015 as part of the Battle for Zendikar set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set returned players to the plane of Zendikar, a world defined by its volatile landscapes and the ongoing conflict between its inhabitants and the destructive, reality-warping Eldrazi titans. As a sorcery spell, the card represents the suffocating, corrupted atmosphere left in the wake of these entities.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Nils Hamm, who is known for his atmospheric and ethereal style. Hamm focused on the pervasive, spreading nature of the corruption, choosing a muted color palette to contrast with the vibrant, adventure-themed aesthetic typical of earlier Zendikar expansions. Upon its release, it was regarded as a functional utility card within the limited format, noted for its ability to clear the board of smaller, aggressive creatures.
