Where it came from
River Herald Guide was released in late 2023 as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, a Magic: The Gathering expansion set that returned players to the plane of Ixalan. The set focused on themes of subterranean exploration and the deep-seated traditions of the indigenous Merfolk, Orc, and Human factions. Designed to support tribal synergies within the set, the card reflects the aesthetic shift toward the lush, underground environments discovered beneath the surface of the plane.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a vivid color palette to highlight the character's role as a pathfinder within the underground river ecosystems. The design was received as a functional utility piece for Limited formats, praised for its ability to provide early-game consistency. It serves as a narrative anchor for the River Heralds faction, emphasizing their spiritual connection to the environment and their role in guiding others through the perilous caverns.
