Provenance

Where it came from

River of Tears was originally printed in the Future Sight expansion in 2007, serving as a distinct piece of land design that mechanically captures the shifting nature of mana. It was conceived as part of a cycle of 'future-shifted' cards intended to preview mechanics or design spaces that Wizards of the Coast might explore in later years. The card’s ability to produce different colors of mana based on whether or not the player has played a land that turn reflects a temporal, reactive playstyle that was notably innovative at the time of its debut.

For the Iconic Masters release in 2017, the card received updated art by illustrator Titus Lunter. Lunter’s depiction of the ethereal, flowing landscape maintains the card’s identity as a 'horizon canopy' style land while grounding it in a more painterly, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined much of the Iconic Masters visual identity. The card remains a staple in various eternal formats, particularly Commander, where its unique conditional mana production offers flexible utility for multi-colored decks.
