Root Out

Root Out was released in the 2016 expansion Shadows over Innistrad, a set defined by its gothic horror aesthetic and thematic focus on investigations, madness, and the corruption of the plane’s angelic guardian, Avacyn. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the set's central 'investigate' keyword, allowing players to destroy artifacts or enchantments while simultaneously generating a Clue token to facilitate card draw. This utility provided a balanced, flavor-appropriate tool for dealing with the mechanical threats introduced in this specific environment.

The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature painterly style to depict an overgrown, blighted forest scene consistent with the set's narrative of encroaching supernatural decay. Voss’s design emphasizes the wild, untamed nature of Innistrad’s flora reclaiming man-made objects, reinforcing the tension between civilization and the rising madness of the plane. Upon its release, the card was regarded by players as a solid, functional piece of draft and sealed deck utility, praised for its versatility in addressing common board threats while maintaining tempo.
