Root Snare

Root Snare was released in 2018 as part of the Core Set 2019 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a common card, it served a functional role in the set’s limited environment, providing green decks with a cost-effective way to mitigate incoming combat damage. The card functions as a 'Fog' effect, a staple mechanic in the game that prevents all combat damage dealt by creatures during a turn, which often serves as a defensive stall tactic in casual and limited play.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed to numerous Magic: The Gathering sets. The design captures the essence of a natural, entangling trap, depicting vines erupting from the forest floor to immobilize unsuspecting foes. The visual style reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic standard for the game, focusing on a moment of kinetic, earth-based magic that emphasizes green mana's protective connection to the wilderness.
