Where it came from
Rootwater Thief was released in the year 2000 as part of the Nemesis expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as part of the Mercadian Masques block, which explored themes of trade, politics, and a setting dominated by merchant empires. It fits into the lore of the Rootwater species, an aquatic race native to the plane of Rath, known for their amphibious nature and opportunistic tactics.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a moody, atmospheric style characteristic of the era's creature designs. The artwork emphasizes the creature's nimble, evasive nature, visually reinforcing its mechanical ability to bypass standard defenses to steal resources from an opponent's deck. It was received by players as a niche utility card, valued primarily for its specific role in aggressive tempo decks of the time.
