Ruin Crab

Ruin Crab was introduced as a common creature card in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar Rising. Designed to evoke the hazardous, shifting landscapes of the plane of Zendikar, the creature functions as a callback to previous 'mill' cards, specifically the Hedron Crab. The set's development team aimed to capture the theme of the 'Landfall' mechanic, which rewards players for placing land cards onto the battlefield by triggering unique environmental effects.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work frequently features in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Kieryluk depicted the creature as a monstrous, crab-like entity fused with Zendikar’s signature crystalline 'hedrons,' emphasizing the way the plane's dangerous geography consumes and corrupts physical objects. Upon release, the card became a notable staple in competitive Constructed formats, particularly in Blue-Black mill decks, where its ability to deplete an opponent’s deck quickly gained it a reputation for being both efficient and disruptive.
