Ruination Guide was released in 2015 as part of the Battle for Zendikar expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As an uncommon creature, the card was designed to support the set's mechanical themes, specifically emphasizing the role of the colorless Eldrazi drones that facilitate the 'devoid' mechanic, which treats colorless spells as having specific color identities for synergy purposes.
