Ruinous Ultimatum

Ruinous Ultimatum was released in 2020 as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set, representing the apex of the cycle of 'Ultimatum' spells that require a demanding mana cost of three different colors. The card was designed to embody the chaotic and destructive nature of the plane of Ikoria, where massive behemoths roam and survivors struggle to endure. Its mechanics, which clear the opponent's board while leaving the controller's side untouched, are intended to function as a definitive game-ending play in multiplayer formats.

The illustrative work for this specific promo version was crafted to emphasize the sheer scale and overwhelming power of the card's effect. As a rare promo printing, it was distributed through various Wizards of the Coast organized play channels, intended to reward players for their participation in the game's community events. It was received by the player base as a powerful, if difficult to cast, centerpiece for multicolor deck archetypes, valued both for its board-sweeping utility and the striking, specialized artwork unique to its promotional release.
