Where it came from
Released in September 2014 as part of the Khans of Tarkir expansion for Magic: The Gathering, Rush of Battle was designed to reflect the set's central theme of warring clans vying for dominance. The set centers on the plane of Tarkir, a world defined by the presence of dragons and the five distinct warrior cultures that rose to power in their absence. This card specifically depicts the Mardu Horde, a clan characterized by swift aggression and horseback warfare, capturing the chaotic energy of their military campaigns.
The card’s art was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who focused on the visceral, charging momentum central to the Mardu aesthetic. By utilizing a dynamic composition and warm, fiery color palettes, Voss aimed to evoke the tactile experience of a battlefield frenzy. The card was well-received by players for its thematic consistency and its utility in the 'Limited' draft environment, where its ability to boost warrior creatures mirrored the coordinated, overwhelming tactics of the clan it represents.
