Rushwood Elemental

Rushwood Elemental was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was inspired by the plane of Mercadia, a world characterized by its unique blend of urban merchant culture and goblin-dominated landscapes, moving away from the high-fantasy tropes of previous sets. The card was designed to highlight the set's focus on resource management and the utilization of untapped lands, embodying the green color identity through its ability to gain strength from the player's forest terrain.

The artwork for this card was created by artist Daren Bader, whose work has been a staple of the game for many years. Bader’s illustration sought to capture the visceral, terrestrial power of the forest, depicting the Elemental as an imposing entity formed from the very roots and canopy of the Rushwood itself. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid mid-range option for green-focused decks, appreciated by players for its thematic consistency and its reliable utility in casual play environments.
