Provenance

Where it came from

The Russet Wolves card was released in 2012 as part of the Dark Ascension set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to continue the gothic horror narrative established in the Innistrad block, focusing on the encroaching darkness and the desperate struggle for survival among the human inhabitants of the plane.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Svetlin Velinov, who chose a dynamic, aggressive composition to reflect the creature's nature as a pack predator. The design focuses on the duality of the wolves' physical form and their role as scavengers in the bleak, resource-scarce environment of Innistrad. Upon release, the card was received as a standard creature utility piece, praised for its thematic consistency with the set's broader flavor of unrelenting hostility.
