Provenance

Where it came from

Ruthless Ripper was originally printed in the 2014 set Khans of Tarkir, designed to showcase the morph mechanic within the black-aligned Sultai Brood. The card was crafted to provide an efficient, aggressive creature that could surprise opponents by flipping face-up for its manifest cost, reflecting the deceitful and swamp-dwelling nature of the Sultai clan.

The Masters 25 version, released in 2018 to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Magic: The Gathering, features the original illustration by Volkan Baga. Baga is known for his atmospheric and detailed fantasy work, and for this piece, he aimed to capture the visceral, predatory aesthetic of the assassin. Upon its inclusion in the celebratory set, the card was received as a functional, low-cost utility tool for limited environments and pauper formats.
