Sadistic Obsession

Sadistic Obsession was released in 2019 as part of Modern Horizons, a groundbreaking Magic: The Gathering set designed specifically to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format without them passing through a standard expansion set. This approach allowed the development team to explore complex mechanics and power levels that would be difficult to balance in a traditional Standard-legal environment.

The card features illustration by Johann Bodin, whose work captures the dark, visceral tone often associated with black-aligned spells in the game. The design focuses on auras and creature empowerment, reflecting the set’s emphasis on rewarding synergy and niche archetypes. While the card is not a staple in competitive formats, it remains a notable example of the creative freedom Wizards of the Coast utilized during the development of this unique, high-concept expansion.
