Sage Aven

Sage Aven was released in 2005 as part of Ninth Edition, the first core set for the Magic: The Gathering card game to feature the modern card frame design. Originally debuted in the Onslaught expansion, the card depicts an Aven—a bird-folk race central to the lore of the Otaria continent—and serves as a representative example of the blue color identity, which emphasizes flying creatures and utility effects like scrying.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, whose work is synonymous with the mid-2000s era of the game. Hudson’s design for the Sage Aven sought to capture the ethereal and studious nature of the bird-folk, utilizing a serene color palette that aligns with the creature's mechanical role of filtering a player's library. Upon its inclusion in the core set, it was received as a solid, functional common that provided consistent value for players drafting or building introductory control decks.
