Where it came from
Salivating Gremlins was released as part of the Kaladesh expansion for Magic: The Gathering in September 2016. The set introduced an artificer-focused theme centered on an invention-themed plane inspired by steampunk and Indian aesthetic influences. Within this narrative, gremlins were depicted as disruptive creatures that fed on Aether, the magical energy source of the plane, and destroyed artifacts in their wake.
The card was illustrated by Lake Hurwitz, who captured the frenetic, mischievous nature of the creature through a dynamic pose. The design emphasizes the gremlin's obsession with consumption, mechanics that reward the player for sacrificing artifacts. Upon its release, the card was widely utilized in limited formats to punish opponents for playing too many artifacts, solidifying its role as an iconic representative of the set's disruptive mechanics.
