Where it came from
Samut, Tyrant Smasher was released as part of the War of the Spark expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2019. This specific version, identified by the collector number 235s, is a promotional iteration featuring the 'planeswalker stamp' and unique alternate-art styling that characterized the set's premium offerings. The card was created to coincide with the conclusion of the Nicol Bolas story arc, depicting the character Samut as she joins the fray to protect her home plane of Amonkhet during the catastrophic planar invasion.
The artwork for this card was provided by illustrator Victor Adame Minguez, who sought to capture Samut's characteristic speed and ferocity through dynamic composition and vibrant color palettes. The design focuses on her role as a swift combatant, reflecting her mechanics which grant haste to creatures. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in aggressive decks and its thematic alignment with the high-stakes narrative of the War of the Spark set, becoming a notable inclusion for collectors interested in the game's modern planeswalker cards.
