Sanctum Prelate

Sanctum Prelate was introduced in the 2016 set Conspiracy: Take the Crown, a Magic: The Gathering expansion designed specifically for multiplayer draft formats. Created by Wizards of the Coast, this set focused on political maneuvering and social interaction, with the card's mechanics reflecting the theme of imposing legalistic control over a chaotic, monarch-themed battlefield. The card allows a player to choose a converted mana cost and restrict opponents from casting spells of that cost, serving as a powerful tool for shutting down key defensive or aggressive strategies in a high-stakes setting.

The card's illustration was crafted by artist Magali Villeneuve, known for her intricate and evocative character designs within the Magic: The Gathering universe. Villeneuve’s depiction of the prelate emphasizes a sense of rigid, religious authority, utilizing heavy robes and golden iconography to evoke the setting’s political intrigue. Upon its release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its utility in eternal formats like Legacy and Vintage, where its ability to tax specific mana costs acts as a vital disruptive element against streamlined combo decks.
