Where it came from
The Sand Warrior token was released as part of the Dominaria United set in 2022, serving as a supporting piece for gameplay rather than a standard collectible card. It was designed to represent the spectral warriors created by the ability of the card Hazezon, Shaper of Sand, which draws on the legacy of the original Hazezon Tamar character from the 1994 Legends expansion. The token was intended to reflect the aesthetic of the arid, desert-themed regions of Dominaria, specifically the Kher Ridge area.
The illustration for the token was created by artist Fajareka Setiawan, who utilized a warm, dusty palette to emphasize the conjured nature of the warriors. The design focuses on the flowing garments and rugged weaponry associated with desert nomads, aligning with the overall visual direction of the Dominaria United set, which sought to blend nostalgia for classic Magic: The Gathering lore with modern, high-fidelity digital art styles. Upon its release, the token was well-received by players for its clarity and cohesive thematic integration with the deck archetypes it supported.
