Lore

Why it matters

This double-sided token allows players to represent two distinct creature types on a single card, offering a practical utility during gameplay. While its status as a common makes it widely accessible, its inclusion in a specialized collection of guild-themed tokens makes it a purposeful piece for those organizing their decks by flavor and theme.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Saproling // Elf Knight token originated as part of the Guilds of Ravnica Guild Kit series, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2018. These kits were designed to celebrate the distinct identities of the ten guilds of Ravnica, providing players with thematic decks and supplemental materials that reflected the lore and aesthetic of the plane. This specific token was included to support the mechanics of the Selesnya Conclave, a faction centered on growth, nature, and the creation of creature tokens.

The design of this double-sided token highlights the visual dichotomy between the two guilds represented. The Saproling side reflects the organic, fungal imagery synonymous with Selesnya's life-generating spells, while the Elf Knight side acknowledges the martial prowess often found in cross-guild synergy. By utilizing a double-sided format, Wizards of the Coast aimed to offer players a functional, space-saving tool that mirrored the versatility required for competitive play during the Ravnica Allegiance and Guilds of Ravnica standard rotation.
