Saproling // Saproling

The Saproling token from the Unstable expansion, released by Wizards of the Coast in December 2017, serves as a unique entry in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Unlike standard expansion tokens, the Unstable set was designed as an 'un-set,' a silver-bordered product intended for casual, humorous play rather than competitive tournament legality. These tokens were specifically crafted to capture the whimsical and experimental aesthetic of the set, which focused on augmented reality and science-fiction tropes.

The art for this token was produced by the Wizards of the Coast internal art team to maintain the cohesive, retro-futuristic laboratory theme pervasive throughout the Unstable collection. The design leans into a clean, stylized appearance that contrasts with the traditional high-fantasy art typical of the game's core sets. It was well-received by players for its vibrant aesthetic and its utility within the set's specific mechanics, which often involved creating large numbers of Saproling creatures to overwhelm opponents.
