Where it came from
Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker was originally introduced in the 2014 Magic: The Gathering set Khans of Tarkir, representing the planeswalker Sarkhan Vol at a pivotal moment in the game's narrative. This specific version, numbered 593, was reprinted for the Jumpstart 2022 product, a set designed to provide a ready-to-play experience where players shuffle two themed packets together. The inclusion of this card in Jumpstart 2022 helped maintain its accessibility for newer players while showcasing the character's signature fire-based abilities and transformation into a dragon.
The character and card design were conceptualized by the Wizards of the Coast creative team to anchor the shifting timelines of the Tarkir block. Illustrators such as Daarken and Aleksi Briclot have famously depicted Sarkhan's volatile nature, with this iteration emphasizing his draconic obsession and the raw power associated with his red-aligned magic. Within the game's competitive ecosystem, the card is respected for its versatility as both a persistent threat and a resilient planeswalker capable of controlling the board state.
