Where it came from
The Sauron, the Dark Lord Art Series card was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth' set. These cards were specifically produced as collectible, non-gameplay inserts found within set boosters, designed to showcase the high-fantasy illustrations commissioned for the expansion without the visual clutter of game text or border elements.
The illustration featured on this specific card was created by artist Yongjae Choi, who was tasked with reimagining the iconic antagonist for a modern trading card format. Choi's design emphasizes the imposing, armor-clad silhouette of Sauron amidst a landscape of fire and shadow, aiming to evoke the overwhelming malice described in J.R.R. Tolkien’s source material. The series was well-received by fans and collectors for its focus on the detailed, atmospheric world-building that defines the collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Middle-earth Enterprises.
