What it does

Menace

Whenever Sauron attacks, exile target creature card from your graveyard. Create a tapped and attacking token that's a copy of that card, except it's a 3/3 black Wraith with menace. At the beginning of the next end step, exile that token unless Sauron is your Ring-bearer.

Provenance

Where it came from

Sauron, the Necromancer was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. This card is a showcase frame variant, featuring the distinct 'Ring' aesthetic designed specifically to tie the mechanics of the game into the lore of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium. The set was created through a partnership between Wizards of the Coast and Middle-earth Enterprises, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional tabletop fantasy gaming and the rich history of Third Age Middle-earth.

The artwork for this particular collector number was executed by Johannes Voss, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for his emotive and high-fantasy style. In this depiction, Voss aimed to capture the brooding, shadowy presence of Sauron during his time as the Necromancer in Dol Guldur. Upon release, the card and the broader showcase treatment were well-received by fans for their thematic consistency and the way the frame design visually represents the corrupting influence of the One Ring.
