Where it came from
Saving Grace was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a white enchantment for the Amonkhet block, a setting inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology and themes of trials, deities, and eventual cataclysm. Mechanically, it serves as a defensive redirection spell, reflecting the set's focus on the protection of others against the encroaching threats of the god-pharaoh Nicol Bolas.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent fantasy artist known for her evocative portrayals of figures and light. In this piece, she aimed to capture a moment of divine or selfless intervention, aligning with the card's function of intercepting damage. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility piece, noted primarily for its specific role in Limited formats and its contribution to the overall narrative of the block's desperate struggle for survival.
