Where it came from
Scalar Scholar was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion Alchemy: Secrets of Strixhaven. Designed exclusively for the digital-first Alchemy format, the card reflects the set's focus on the mechanics of the Strixhaven School of Mages, specifically the Quandrix College, which emphasizes the intersection of mathematics and nature. The card was created to leverage the unique capabilities of digital gameplay, utilizing the 'conjure' mechanic to generate cards from outside the player's collection.
The card features artwork by Anna Steinbauer, who captures the essence of the Quandrix aesthetic through a blend of academic rigor and fractal-based magic. The design process for this set prioritized cards that could utilize digital tracking to manage complex card generation, ensuring that Scalar Scholar served as a functional piece within a deck focused on resource management and card advantage. Upon its release, it became a staple utility creature for decks utilizing the blue-green color identity.
