Distracted Botanist

Distracted Botanist was released in 2021 as part of Alchemy: Secrets of Strixhaven, a digital-only expansion for the Magic: The Gathering Arena platform. Unlike traditional physical cards, Alchemy sets were designed to leverage digital-only mechanics, such as card modification and conjuring, to create a more dynamic gameplay experience that would be difficult to replicate in print. The set draws its thematic inspiration from the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion, focusing on the whimsical and academic atmosphere of the magical university.

The card features artwork by Clint Cearley, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering card game. The design captures the narrative of a researcher so enamored with their botanical studies that they remain oblivious to their surroundings, a common trope within the eccentric faculty and student body of the Strixhaven setting. The card's reception was defined by its integration into the unique digital balancing ecosystem of the Alchemy format, where designers aimed to provide players with more flavorful, niche tools for deck building.
