Provenance

Where it came from

The Scarland Thrinax was released in February 2009 as part of the Conflux expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as a multi-colored creature card intended to support the Alara block's emphasis on three-color themes, specifically the Jund shard which favored black, red, and green mana. As a creature that grows stronger when other creatures are sacrificed, it serves as a functional piece within the aggressive deck archetypes prevalent in that era of the game's competitive environment.

The illustration for the card was provided by artist Jesper Ejsing. Ejsing focused on depicting the Thrinax as a formidable, reptilian predator, capturing the visceral and chaotic nature of the Jund ecosystem where survival depends on constant consumption. The artwork was well-received by players for its dynamic posing and its success in visually representing the savage, predatory mechanics inherent in the card's ability, reinforcing the thematic identity of the set.
