What it does
Counter target spell. Clash with an opponent. If you win, at the beginning of your next main phase, you may add an amount of colorless mana equal to that spell's mana value. (Each clashing player reveals the top card of their library, then puts that card on their choice of the top or bottom. A player wins if their card had a greater mana value.)

Where it came from
Scattering Stroke was released in 2011 as part of the inaugural Commander product line, a series of five preconstructed decks designed specifically for the popular multiplayer Magic: The Gathering format. The card appeared in the 'Mirror Mastery' deck, which focused on the Riku of Two Reflections commander. Its introduction marked a pivotal moment in Wizards of the Coast's strategy to support Commander as an officially recognized format, providing players with functional, flavor-rich tools tailored for casual, social play.
The card was illustrated by Mike Dringenberg, a veteran artist known for his significant contributions to the DC Comics Vertigo line. In designing the visual aesthetic of the spell, Dringenberg captured the volatile nature of redirected arcane energy, employing his signature illustrative style to depict the chaotic dispersal of magic. Within the game's competitive ecosystem, it became a notable utility piece for blue-aligned decks, praised by players for its ability to offer situational flexibility in large, unpredictable multiplayer games.
