Where it came from
Scholar of New Horizons was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War Commander set, a collection of supplemental cards designed to expand upon the themes of the core expansion. The card was crafted to support the artifact-heavy mechanics prevalent in the set, drawing inspiration from the rich lore of Magic: The Gathering’s past, specifically the conflict between Urza and Mishra. It reflects the set's aesthetic focus on industrial machinery, ancient technology, and the academic pursuit of historical knowledge.
The card was illustrated by Campbell White, who leaned into the scholarly and explorative motif of the character. The artwork aims to convey a sense of quiet investigation amidst the chaotic backdrop of the Brothers' War, emphasizing the figure’s role as an archivist of lost mechanical innovations. Upon release, it was well-received by players focusing on commander decks that rely on artifact synergy and graveyard recursion, serving as a functional utility piece that rewards players for maintaining an expansive board state.
