Scissors Lizard

Scissors Lizard was released in 2020 as part of the Unsanctioned set, a standalone box product designed by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering franchise. This card belongs to the silver-bordered series, which occupies a unique space in the game’s history by focusing on humorous, experimental mechanics that do not conform to standard tournament rules. The set was conceived as a lighthearted celebration of the game’s long-standing traditions, offering players a break from competitive formats with cards that prioritize wit and tabletop interaction.

The creature was illustrated by artist Matt Cavotta, whose whimsical visual style was selected to capture the card’s playful premise. By literalizing the classic game of rock-paper-scissors within a creature combat framework, the design team intended to create a moment of genuine levity during gameplay. Upon release, the card was well-received by fans of casual formats for its clever mechanical nod to childhood games, solidifying its place as a representative example of the imaginative risks taken within the silver-bordered design space.
