Scorching Missile

Scorching Missile was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set marked the return of the game’s storyline to the plane of Dominaria, introducing mechanics centered around the graveyard, such as flashback and threshold. The card was designed as a common-rarity red sorcery, intended to provide players with a straightforward, efficient damage-dealing option during the aggressive, combat-heavy gameplay that defined the Odyssey block.

The artwork for Scorching Missile was illustrated by Glen Angus, a prolific contributor to the game during the early 2000s. Angus opted for a kinetic, high-energy visual style that captured the explosive nature of the card’s effect, featuring a streak of fire directed at an unseen target. Upon release, the card was received as a standard utility tool for limited formats, valued for its ability to clear early-game threats while adhering to the thematic focus on elemental destruction prevalent in red mana card designs of that era.
