Where it came from
Scourge of Fleets was originally printed as a rare card in the 2014 Magic: The Gathering set Journey into Nyx, a block themed around Greek mythology and the enchantment-focused plane of Nyx. This specific version is a promotional release, identifiable by the star symbol and set-specific collector numbering, typically distributed through official Wizards of the Coast play programs or event participation during the set's release window.
The card features artwork by Chase Stone, who rendered the sea creature with a focus on scale and the watery aesthetic characteristic of the Blue mana color identity. It was designed as a high-mana value battlefield control piece, intended to provide a significant board-clearing effect in casual and Commander formats. The design reflects the top-down mythology approach of the block, portraying a kraken-like entity rising from the depths to return opposing fleets to their owner's hand.
