Where it came from
Scourge of the Skyclaves was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar Rising. Designed as a high-risk, high-reward creature, it reflects the volatile nature of the Zendikar plane, where floating landmasses known as Skyclaves serve as dangerous ruins filled with ancient power. This specific card, numbered 122p, is part of the promotional set released to showcase unique frame treatments and alternate art styles associated with the return to this fan-favorite setting.
The art and design team aimed to capture the imposing, monstrous aesthetic of the Skyclave entities, emphasizing the creature's ability to scale in power based on the life totals of the players. The card’s design was received as a mechanically significant addition to formats like Modern and Legacy, where its ability to function as a low-cost, late-game threat became a subject of intense discussion among competitive players who value efficiency and board state manipulation.
