Screeching Skaab

Screeching Skaab was released in 2012 as part of the Dark Ascension expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the gothic horror themes of the Innistrad block, depicting a world where humanity faced overwhelming supernatural threats. As a blue creature card, the Skaab was designed to fit the set's mechanical emphasis on the graveyard as a resource, allowing players to mill cards to fuel self-reanimation strategies common to the undead-themed mechanics of the era.

The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Stewart, who captured the grotesque, stitched-together aesthetic of the necro-alchemical experiments performed by the set's antagonists, the Skaaberen. The design intent was to reflect the frantic, decaying nature of these constructs, utilizing a color palette consistent with the gloomy, rain-swept atmosphere of Innistrad. The card is noted by players for its efficient mana cost, which helped it become a staple in Limited formats during the Dark Ascension release cycle.
