Where it came from
Scriv, the Obligator was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set. The card represents a unique inclusion designed specifically for the multiplayer Commander format, reflecting the thematic focus on the magical university of Strixhaven. It occupies the role of a utility creature, utilizing the 'goad' mechanic to influence combat between opponents, which aligns with the political and manipulative nature often associated with the Witherbloom or Silverquill-aligned philosophies within the game's lore.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk. His design emphasizes the rigid, bureaucratic, and slightly unsettling aesthetic of a spirit bound to enforce magical laws. The visual direction aimed to convey a sense of spectral authority, utilizing the distinct high-fantasy art style consistent with the Strixhaven aesthetic. Upon release, the card was received by the player base as an effective niche tool for forcing interaction in stalemate game states, becoming a staple for decks focused on controlling board flow and political gameplay.
