Scryb Sprites originated as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set for Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. As one of the original green creatures, it was designed to function as a low-cost, flying utility unit that established the mechanical identity of the color green during the game's nascent stage. It represents the early vision of Richard Garfield, who sought to blend intricate strategy with high-fantasy tropes in a format that was entirely novel at the time.

The card's iconic illustration was produced by Quinton Hoover, a foundational artist for the early game.
