Sea of Clouds was originally introduced in the Battlebond set in 2018, designed as part of a cycle of partner lands intended to facilitate multiplayer gameplay formats like Two-Headed Giant. Its mechanical identity focuses on providing mana flexibility for cooperative play, reflecting the collaborative nature of the set’s design philosophy. When the card was reimagined for the Zendikar Rising Expeditions in 2020, it was selected to be part of a premium, foil-etched showcase series that celebrated the iconic landscapes of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.

Artist Sam Burley provided the imagery for this version, shifting the card's aesthetic toward the high-fantasy, adventure-focused style characteristic of the Zendikar plane.
