Where it came from
Second Sunrise was released in 2003 as part of the Mirrodin set, the debut expansion for the Mirrodin block in Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield and his team, the set introduced an artifact-heavy theme centered on a metallic world, with Second Sunrise serving as a key white spell that reflected the set's focus on recurring artifacts from the graveyard to the battlefield.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose work often captures the ethereal and transformative nature of high fantasy. Upon its release, Second Sunrise was viewed as a niche utility card, though it eventually became infamous in tournament play for enabling powerful, complex combo decks that could loop artifacts repeatedly, ultimately leading to its ban in the Modern format to maintain competitive game balance.
