Where it came from
Secret Rendezvous was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a white sorcery card, it reflects the game's exploration of political and communal mechanics, offering a symmetrical effect where both the caster and a target opponent draw three cards. This design choice aligns with the set's theme of academic collaboration and competition within a magical university setting.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the fantasy gaming space known for her emotive and detailed character portraits. Villeneuve sought to capture the clandestine and intellectual spirit of the card's name, depicting two figures engaged in a quiet, high-stakes exchange amidst the backdrop of a grand library. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its unconventional mana value and its role as a rare example of card-draw utility within the color white.
