Where it came from
Selfless Cathar was released in 2014 as part of the Magic 2015 core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as a common white creature card, fitting into the set's broader mechanical focus on creature-based combat and tribal synergies. Within the lore of the game, cathars are religious soldiers of the plane of Innistrad, known for their devotion to protecting humanity against the supernatural horrors of their home world.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who depicted a standard-bearer in a moment of martial resolve. The design reflects the classic white-aligned strategy of sacrificing a unit to grant a defensive or offensive bonus to the remaining board state. While not a high-impact card in competitive formats, it remains a recognized example of the utility-focused creature designs common to Magic's core sets during this era.
