Where it came from
Seller of Songbirds was released in 2012 as part of the Return to Ravnica expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the Selesnya Conclave, one of the ten iconic guilds of the Ravnica plane, which emphasizes themes of communal growth and creature token synergy. Mechanically, the card was crafted as a common-rarity utility creature intended for Limited play, providing a sturdy body alongside an additional flying creature token upon its death to provide long-term value.
The card's visual identity was brought to life by artist Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature ethereal and painterly style to capture the peaceful, nature-oriented aesthetic of the Selesnya. The artwork depicts a figure tending to avians within the dense, lush architecture of the city-plane, reflecting the guild's role as caretakers. It was generally well-received by players of the era as a reliable, straightforward card that embodied the spirit and flavor of the guild perfectly.
