The card depicts a servant of the Baron Sengir, the primary antagonist of the set's lore, reflecting the Gothic horror aesthetic that defined the expansion's artistic direction. As a functional piece of game design, the card was intended to create immediate board presence by generating creature tokens, a hallmark of the black mana color identity during the game's early years.

The version from Classic Sixth Edition, released in 1999, marks the card's inclusion in the first modern 'core' set.
