Provenance

Where it came from

The Serra Avatar card was released in 2012 as a promotional item accompanying the video game Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013. This specific iteration served as a bridge between the digital gaming experience and the physical trading card game, rewarding players with a tangible collectible that featured alternate art not found in standard expansion sets.

The card features artwork by Greg Staples, who was tasked with reimagining the iconic Serra Avatar for this promotional release. Staples employed a dramatic, painterly style that emphasized the character’s ethereal and divine nature, moving away from the more traditional fantasy aesthetics of the original 1999 printing to better suit the modernized visual language of the game at that time.
