Where it came from
Serra Inquisitors was released in 1995 as part of the Homelands expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Developed during a tumultuous period for Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to flesh out the lore of the plane of Ulgrotha. The card depicts a militant force within the Church of Serra, reflecting the darker, more protective themes introduced in this specific narrative arc.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic figures in the game's early history. His approach for the Homelands cycle often emphasized atmospheric and somewhat somber tones to match the set's distinct gothic-horror aesthetic. While the card is often cited by players for its unconventional mechanics and place in the lower tier of competitive viability, it remains a notable example of the stylistic direction the game took during its experimental mid-90s era.
