Where it came from
Serra's Embrace was released in 1998 as part of the Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the first major set of the Urza Block, it introduced a mechanical focus on enchantments and artifacts, reflecting the high-fantasy narrative of the powerful planeswalker Urza. The card is designed to represent the divine protection of the character Serra, who was a central figure in the game's early lore, embodying themes of light, healing, and transcendental power.
The artwork was illustrated by Rebecca Guay, whose distinctive, painterly style became iconic during this era of the game. Guay was tasked with depicting the ethereal and benevolent nature of Serra's influence, resulting in a composition that remains one of the most recognizable examples of her work from the late 1990s. The card was well-received by players for both its aesthetic beauty and its functional utility, becoming a staple in white-aligned decks throughout the competitive landscape of the time.
