Shade's Breath

Shade's Breath was released as a common black enchantment in the Onslaught expansion, which launched in October 2002. As the first set in the Onslaught block, it shifted the focus of Magic: The Gathering back to creature-heavy gameplay and introduced the tribal mechanics that would define the era. The card was designed to support black-aligned decks in the Limited environment, offering a repeatable way to weaken opposing creatures in a set that leaned heavily on combat interactions.

The atmospheric illustration for this card was provided by artist Darrell Riche, who contributed to numerous sets during this period. His design aimed to capture the dark, creeping nature of the card's effect, emphasizing a sense of decay and shadow. Upon its release, it was regarded as a standard utility piece for draft and sealed play, noted for its effectiveness in wearing down small-to-mid-sized threats over the course of a long game.
