Provenance

Where it came from

Shadow of the Enemy was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth' set, a collaborative expansion that brought J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium into the trading card game format. The card was designed to mechanically represent the pervasive influence of Sauron and the corruption of the One Ring, specifically utilizing the 'Amass' mechanic to depict the gathering strength of darkness in Mordor. It was created to provide players with a strategic tool that rewards the destruction of creatures by accumulating power, mirroring the thematic weight of the source material.

The artwork for this card was crafted by illustrator Dominik Mayer, whose signature high-contrast, angular style leans into the expressionistic and foreboding aesthetic of the Dark Lord’s reach. Mayer sought to capture the abstract, suffocating pressure of an encroaching shadow rather than a literal depiction of a character, focusing on jagged geometries and oppressive purples and blacks. The card was well received by the community for its thematic resonance and its utility in limited formats, serving as a functional centerpiece for decks built around the set's Orc and Army creature types.
